Purpose

  • Take a deeper look at assessment resources available in the curriculum
  • Discuss with other teachers who grade and assess in similar ways about how to grade and assess CS Discoveries

Objectives

  • Develop concrete strategies and plans for grading while using this curriculum
  • Make plans for sharing resources and think about how they can build off of each other’s work
  • Become more familiar with the assessment resources in the curriculum

Supplies & Prep

Room Setup:

  • Normal Breakout Room Set Up
  • Have teachers sit in groups with other people who grade in similar ways to them (standards based, ABC, projects, tests, etc.)

(5 minutes) Getting people into the right groups

Remarks

This is a working session where you will go through the assessments and look at how you will leverage what’s in the curriculum to meet your own needs in your school.

Prompt (also on slides): How does assessment and grading work in your school (for example, standards based grading, mastery, etc)

  • Whip around the room to develop a list

Groups: Get people sitting by assessment and grading types

  • Assign each assessment and grading type into regions of the room
  • Have people move to their part of the room

(5 minutes) Why do we assess?

Reflection Prompt: Why do we assess student learning? What is the purpose?

Discussion Goal

The goal here is to get at the main point of assessment. We want to see where students are at in their learning so we can help them improve going forward. However, that is not always the way this plays out in reality.

Discuss: Share out some thought people wrote down.

(10 minutes) Read about assessment in the curriculum guide

Prompt: Head to pages 40 - 41 in your curriculum guide and read about the approach to and opportunities for assessment in the curriculum.

  • (4 minutes) Silent reading
  • (3 minutes) Discuss any questions or ideas that came to mind while reading at your tables
  • (3 minutes) Share out questions to the whole group

Review what's in the curriculum

Prompt: Prioritizing whatever assessment approaches or features in the curriculum you've not seen or used this week, go investigate examples of the types of assessments you’ve just read about.

As you review think about (on slides):

  • What are the learning goals (both content and practices) for these activities?
  • What do students create or produce to demonstrate knowledge?

Make a Plan (20 minutes)

(19 minutes) Develop a plan for assessment and grading

Prompt (also on slides): Work with your group to develop a plan for using these assessments to assign grades

  • How will you use the assessment opportunities in the curriculum?
  • What additional work will you need to do to use these assessments work for your context?
  • What additional assessments will you need to create?Would there be value in sharing them?

(1 minute) Pre-Break Reminders

  • Teachers now have a 15 minute break
  • If you are running behind you can shorten the break to 10 minutes
  • Reminder teachers what time you want them to return from break before they leave
  • After break they will be planning so grabbing their plan book and school calendar during break could be helpful.
