Facilitation Guide

Prior to the Workshop

Prior to the workshop, create the following posters, which will be used as part of participant introductions:

  • map of the USA or State (if everyone is from one state) that everyone can put a post it on to say where they are from
  • graph number of years of teaching experience
  • graph of number of years of computer science experience (any kind)
  • grades from 6th to 12th and create a bar chart of the breakdown of teachers in your room
  • "random skills"

As Teachers Come In

Teaching Tip

Teachers really appreciate when facilitators know their names. Start early and keep working at it. As teachers come in is a good time to try to learn a couple names.

As teachers are coming in (put up slide with directions):

  • Have teachers add post-its to the Introduction Posters (see prep for list) around the room to highlight the many different perspectives and strengths we each bring to the room
  • Take attendance and have teachers join your section

(5 minutes) Welcome and Kick Off

(2 minutes) Leads Introductions

  • You (the leads) should introduce yourselves
    • Share details about your background and what brought you to being a facilitator
      • Have you taught the course?
      • Have you taught other CS courses?
      • What is your background with CS?

(2 minutes) What you bring to the room?

  • Introduce the different roles of people in the room they have (where teachers are from, facilitators in training, etc).

  • Explain the posters:

Remarks

The goal of creating these posters is to highlight that everyone brings something to the room, and there’s a spectrum of experiences and perspectives here. We can all learn from each other because we all bring different skills and backgrounds to the room. <Share how this applies to you.> (For example: If you have fewer years of teaching experience than others in the room be vulnerable and point that out. Point out what you bring to the room is your deep understanding of the curriculum and facilitation skills. Others in the room may have things they can share with you about teaching.)

(15 minutes) Teacher Introductions

  • Give participants time to introduce themselves to the people in their groups. Have them share their name, where they are from and a fun fact.

(5 minutes) Norms

  • Come up with some shared norms for the week (Prompt on Slides). Some you may want to consider are:

    • Be on time
    • Assume best intentions
    • Be open to trying new things
    • Be willing to share your ideas and knowledge with others
  • Put the group norms you create on a poster so that you will have them to refer to all week
