Gots and Needs Review (15 minutes)

Teaching Tip

NOTE: If you are going to mix or combine CSP and CSD teachers in the next session you will need to shorten this session to allow for transition time. Transitions usually take 10-15 minutes. You can find that time by shortening the morning welcome to 10 minutes and shortening the table or group share out during the discussion.

(2 minutes) Attendance

  • Have everyone complete the attendance for the day
    • There will be a specific link for the day at your workshop
    • Check that everyone is marked as present in the online workshop dashboard

(13 minutes) Daily Welcome

  • Overview of the day
  • Housekeeping
  • Review Gots and Needs from previous day - when will needs be addressed

Equity Theme Kick Off (30 minutes)

(8 minutes) Feeling Included

Think-Pair-Share: Think about a time in your life where you were with a group of people and:

  • You felt like you fit in
  • You felt like an outsider

What was different about the two situations which made you feel differently?

(8 minutes) Inclusions in your CS Classroom

Think-Pair-Share: Your computer science classroom is a group.

  • What impacts students
    • Joining your class?
    • Feelings of inclusion in your class?

(4 min) Equity video

(8 minutes) Discuss Video at Table

Give teachers time to debrief the video at their table by sharing thoughts on the following prompt.

Prompt: What did the video bring to mind for you?

(2 min) Goal Statement

Remarks

Our goal is for your population of CSD students to represent the larger school population.

In order to accomplish this goal it takes both getting students into the room and keeping them there.

We’re not going to reach that goal passively, which is where the next session comes in.

Good intentions are not enough!

For now, think about the question we were left with in this video— is there an equity issue in your school? We’ll start there in our next session.
