Session 44: Scenarios

35 minutes

discussion-based

Purpose

Using scenarios as the center of the discussion participants will come back to directly thinking about the theme of the day: equitable classrooms. The comfort of their TLO room will hopefully give you another chance to dig deeper on supporting students in an equitable classroom.

  • Discuss strategies for dealing with common situations that impact an equitable classroom

Remarks

We started talking earlier today in our community sessions about recruiting a diverse set of students and support those diverse needs. We are going to focus this afternoon on support that diverse set of student needs. Needs come up in a lot of different ways. Right now we are going to look at a couple common scenarios that might happen in a CS Discoveries classroom. While looking at each scenario you will have time to discuss with a partner what you notice about the exchange and what you might do if this was your room.

(18 minutes) Scenarios

Remarks

Let’s look at a couple specific scenarios that might happen in the classroom

3 Scenarios (details on slides)

  • Spend about 6 minutes on each scenario
  • Have teachers talk through what is happening in the scenario and then reflect on:
    1. How do you interpret this exchange?
    2. What would you do as the teacher in this room?
    3. Think: When you were reading these scenarios, did you think of any students from your own classroom?

(15 minutes) Reflection

Discuss with another pair:

  • How did you interpret those scenes?
  • Differences and similarities?

Remarks

How many groups had different interpretations of the scenarios?

Discussion Goal

As teachers share out you will want to make sure that different peoples perspectives are valued but also push people to think a little bit beyond where they might be at the moment.

Some things to consider asking teachers about:

  • How would your response to the situation possibly impact that students feelings of belonging?
  • How does this situation relate back to some of the things we heard the students on the video speak about?

Discuss as a whole group: The difference in interpretations and why they happened.
