(9 minutes) Reflection

Discussion Goal

The goal of this discussion is to bring people to thinking about how they were not told the right answers for things but instead got to engage in the process and come up with their own ideas.

  • Think-Pair-Share: What did you notice about what you were doing during these lessons? How were you learning the content being presented?

(4 minutes) Structure of Lessons

Remarks

The engagement you all noticed and the way you were given freedom to explore in order to come up with your own answers is an intentional choice. Our lessons are structured in a way to support inquiry and discovery of concepts. In addition, the facilitators were intentionally modelling how that structure plays out in teaching. We call this structure ABC CBV... Activity Before Concept....Concept Before Vocabulary. This means that first, you got to try something before we came up with a shared concept. Once we had a shared concept, then we could put a vocab word on it.

Discussion Goal

Goal: The intent of this discussion is to get teachers thinking about both why people make websites, and why they use websites. Push teachers to give detailed purposes for some of the websites that the group generated.

  • (5 min) Prompt: With a neighbor, come up with a list of what you think are the top 5 most frequently visited websites. These can include websites that you visit often, but also consider which pages the other people in your life use frequently.
  • (5 min) Share: Have groups share out their top 5 websites lists, keeping track of unique sites on the board.
  • (5 min) At Table Discuss: Why do you think these websites are so commonly used? What purpose do they serve, or what problems do they solve?

  • Summarize:

    • Show list of most visited sites in the US
    • Overview how this conversation they just had is what students are thinking about during Lesson 1 of Unit 2
    • Explain that the next lesson has students drawing ideas for a personal website
    • Now we will kick off unit 2 by exploring how to create websites
