Session 36: Community: Recruiting Students

9:15 am to 10:15 am

community session | discussion-based

Purpose

Develop an actionable plan for recruiting diverse students and support students with diverse learning needs

Objectives

  • have thought about the need for supporting students once they’re in the room, and have strategies for supporting those students.
  • have an action plan for priming the recruitment cycle, including pulling from the list of stakeholders to help your cause.
  • have thought about recruiting in the context of your school/district/community

Supplies & Prep

Room Setup:

  • The schedules are set up so this sessions at the same time for CSP and CSD. If CSP and CSD cohorts are co-located for the week consider if venue allows bringing together CSP and CSD teachers. If you have to stay in two different rooms you could split half CSP and half CSD in each room so they get to know each other and can share across grades. Talk to your regional partner about what the venue can support and what will be most beneficial for your teachers.
  • If all CSP and CSD teachers from the region will be there, Ask that they sit in HOMOGENEOUS GROUPS

Recruiting and Supporting Students (60 minutes)

Facilitation Guide

Recruiting and Supporting Students (60 minutes)

(8 min) what is an example of an equity challenge in your school?

  • (2 min) journal + table
  • (6 min) whole group discussion of the equity and access issues we see in our schools
    • What will it take to start addressing these issues?
    • Thinking prompt to end: How can the stakeholders we identified yesterday help address these issues of equity?

(2 minutes) Say

Remarks

Yesterday we talked about the community of teachers and stakeholders in your region that contribute to building your computer science program. Today we’re going to shift to think about how we can actively recruit and support a diverse set of students in our classes. If we think back to the idea that CSP and CSD are for everyone, and that we would like you to think about what it would mean to have a classroom population that is representative of your school population, then we’re going to have to dig in and actively recruitment for those students. This isn’t a problem that is going to be fixed overnight, and we have to be ready for this to take time, but we’re going to take a first step together here.

Discussion Goal

During share out, give space for regional partners to share about ways they have helped with recruitment in the past

(15 minutes) Create a list of effective recruitment strategies.

  • (5 min) think and table share: what are the most effective strategies you have ever used or seen to recruit a diverse group of students (not necessarily just academic)?
  • (10 min) share out, facilitator records on chart paper or in the notes. If it doesn’t come out naturally, point to the stakeholders identified in the previous session, and ask how they’re involved in effective recruiting.
    • Instruction to participants during share out: document strategies that you might want to try in appendix of teal book on recruitment page.

(10 min) Develop a recruitment plan (appendix of teal book).

Keeping in mind the strategies we shared yesterday for getting the support of stakeholders, work with a partner to talk through and develop a recruitment plan (following the appendix in your teal book).

  • If school administrators and counselors aren’t a strong asset in building support for your CS program, Feel free to change the stakeholders at the bottom of the recruitment plan page to a different group that we discussed yesterday.
  • Note that your plans do not need to be the same— this person is a thought partner to bounce ideas off of.

(10 min) Share out and discuss.

Popcorn around (or use the share out strategy of your choice) to get at least one response per table:

  • How can the stakeholders we identified yesterday help with recruiting?
  • How is your recruitment strategy impacted by the other course represented here?

(15 min) Supporting students once they’re in the room

Remarks

Once we get actively-recruited students in the room, we have to do the work to keep them there and to support their learning needs.

  • (2 min) Thinking prompt: what is your role and responsibility in actively supporting students?
    • Just think about this and have it in the back of your mind as we discuss the following
  • (13 min) Discuss

Across the 7+ lessons you’ve seen this week you have talked about a lot of ways to support students. What concrete structures and teaching practices have you see that can provide support for your students?

  • (5 min) talk at tables
  • (8 min) Popcorn around the room to share out examples.
    • On share out, ask what practices teachers might want to dig into further during academic year workshops
    • Facilitator takes notes while sharing

Closing words

Remarks

Both recruitment and supporting students are topics that we will come back to throughout the year during our quarterly workshops. As we mentioned before, this isn’t an issue that will be fixed overnight, but the ask is that we all strive for iterative improvement towards the goal.

(1 minute) Pre-Break Reminder

  • Teachers have a 15 minute break
  • If you are running behind you might consider reducing it to 10
  • Reminder teachers before they leave for break what time you will start back
