(5 min) Introduction to Unit 3
Using the slides and Curriculum Guide as a guide go over:
- Structure of the unit
- Concepts covered in the unit (including defining key terms used in the unit)
- Types of lessons
- Introduce Game Lab - The TLOs will do this so don't go into too much depth
- The specific lessons that are introduced at this workshop
- How is this connected to Unit 2 (communicating in a language for a computer)
(6 min) Programming For Entertainment
Discussion Goal
The goal here is to get participants to reflect more critically on why people seek out entertainment. Participants are likely to come up with "boredom" as a common answer, but push them to think more deeply about what their chosen form of entertainment actually does for them - what problem does it solve. Potential answers include:
- Escape from difficult reality
- Connection with others
- Learning or experiencing new things
- Sparking creativity
Discuss:
- What is your favorite form of entertainment, and what problem does it solve for you?
- How do you think your favorite form of entertainment is impacted by CS?
(3 min) Previously on... for next TLO
- Using the slides, fill in the gap of the lessons or activities they would have seen between the last lesson and this one.
- Remind teachers that yesterday we wrapped up Unit 2
- Now we are starting Unit 3
- Unit 3 Lesson 1 - We did some stuff from the lesson which introduces programming for entertainment during the unit kick off. Students also do some research.
