Session 2: Monday Kickoff: Overview of CS Discoveries

  • Kick off workshop

  • Introduce Unit 1

Objectives

  • Understand that you are part of a region cohort all learning about CSD together and that there are other cohorts around the country they can connect to as well
  • Understand the code.org professional learning program
  • Know what we’re doing this week
  • Recognize the origin/goals of CSD
  • High level understanding of the goals of Unit 1

Teaching Tip

This session is scheduled for 90 minutes but there is an outline of 80 minutes of content below. This builds in a couple minutes of flex time in case the first session of the morning ran long. You can choose to use it for a brain break if you don't need to use it to make up time.

(10 minutes) Program Overview

    • Where are the regional partners?
    • Why do we have regional partners?
    • Goals of regional partners
    • Who are the regional partners

(8 minutes) Workshop Overview

    • Overview of the week and what will be happening

(7 minutes) Introduce TLOs (with slides)

  • What is a TLO?

  • Spend a few minutes flipping through the Curriculum Guide. While you’re flipping through it,
    • Flag stuff you want to come back to and anything that is particularly interesting or useful

  • Discuss your findings with an elbow partner

  • History of CS in Middle Schools & The Importance of Starting Early
  • CSD is for everyone
  • Build out pathway

(7 minutes) Overview of units

Using slides go over:

  • What is the main content covered in each?
  • What do students do in the unit?

(3 minutes) Lessons for Week

Using slides go over:

  • Which units/lessons will be explored this week through TLOs?
  • Give a visual overview of the lessons that will be covered at the workshop.

Unit 1 Intro (20 minutes)

(7 minutes) Introduction to the unit (using slides + teal book)

  • Using the unit overview on pages 5 - 6 of the Curriculum Guide as a guide, introduce the unit. Specifically emphasize:
    • Structure of the unit
    • Concepts covered in the unit (including defining key terms used in the unit)
    • Types of lessons
    • The specific lessons that are introduced at this workshop

(3 minutes) Overview of Student Practices

Using slides go over:

  • Problem Solving, Persistence, Creativity, Collaboration, Communication

(10 minutes) Previously On

  • Talk about Unit Lesson 1 - Aluminum Foil Boats briefly

Discussion Goal

Goal: Highlight the different types of problems we solve all the time at different scales and how the problem solving process can be applied to all of them.

  • Prompt: Write down one big problem and one small problem?
  • Using slides introduce problem solving process used in unit 1
  • Think-Pair-Share: How could you use the problem solving process to help you solve your big problem or your small problem?

Having learned about the problem solving process and thought about applying it to some problems we head into Unit 1 Lesson 3 which you are about to see!
