Purpose

Teachers think about what questions they still have. Teachers are given time to take out their schedule and create a timeline for the course. They can think about assessment or other things they want to start digging into. Mostly work time.

Remarks

We’ve now done 12 lessons from across Units 1,2 and 3, looked at how to use key practices in the curriculum, talked about how to engage diverse groups of learners, made a plan for assessment, talked about community and equity, and shared strategies to support students. That’s a LOT to do in a week, so pat yourselves on the back :)

With lots of exploration often comes lots of questions. We are going to spend some time now to try to address any remaining questions. We’re also going to spend this time together making a plan for getting to the start of the year, and talking about how we can support one another and what Code.org and your facilitators can do to support you.

(4 minutes) Seed Question Parking Lot

Do one more call for questions or needs that teachers have. Have them write them down on post it notes. Collect the questions and consider how to address them while they work on their action plan.

(20 minutes) Action Plan

Have teachers open the Curriculum Guide and read through page 45. This section focuses on Supplies, Materials, Tech Requirements and Suggestions for Planning for Your Year.

Using Appendix A of the Curriculum Guide, have teachers work on making an action plan for getting through the first couple months of school.

(20 min) Clean Out Question Parking Lot

If there are remaining questions on the Question Parking Lot address them with the room. You don't have to have an "answer" to every question but find a way to address every question. Possible ways to do this are:

  • Answer the question
  • Direct them to a resource that has the answer (Example: Curriculum Guide to read the statement about standards mappings)
  • Giving them a way to work to answer the question with other teachers (Example: Sending a teacher to the forum if they are working on a very specific issue at their school)
  • Explaining when they will learn more about that (example: Academic Year workshops for Units 4 through 6)

Facilitator Tip

Some participants might prefer to work independently during this time.

Give teachers a couple suggestions of things they may want to work on. Have them find people who want to talk about similar things. They could consider:

  • Continuing their action plan
  • Brainstorm ideas for building an inclusive classroom culture
  • Calendaring their first couple months of school
  • Looking over lessons and projects in Units 1 and 2 to get more familiar with the curriculum
  • Playing around in Web Lab or Game Lab
