(5 minutes) Creating Groups

Remarks

Earlier this week we started our conversation about assessment. Today you will have the opportunity to turn your initial ideas into concrete plans. This is a working session where you will go through the assessments in the CSD curriculum and look at how you will leverage what’s in the curriculum to meet your own needs in your school. The benefit of doing this today is the ability to collaborate and share ideas with other educators. However, many of us have different school requirements and norms around assessment. Before we begin our working session we are going to create groups with similar grading contexts.

Facilitator Instructions:

  • Project the list of common assessment types (standards based, mastery, ABCDF, non-graded)
  • Ask participants if they use a grading method not listed. Make note of this grading type
  • Poll the room to get a sense for how many people fall into each group
  • Assign each assessment and grading type into regions of the room
  • Have people move to their part of the room

Assessment in the Curriculum (20 minutes)

Facilitator Tip

Remind participants that they can use the Guide to Assessment on pages 43 - 44 of the Curriculum Guide.

(20 minutes) Explore Assessment Opportunities

Prompt: Explore different assessment types (lesson level assessment opportunities, end of chapter projects, end of unit tests) within the curriculum.

As you review think about:

  • What are the learning goals (both content and practices) for these activities?
  • What do students create or produce to demonstrate knowledge?

Make a Plan (20 minutes)

(12 minutes) Develop a Plan for Assessment

Prompt: Work with your group to develop a plan for using these assessments to assign grades and or provide feedback to students

  • How will you use the assessment opportunities in the curriculum?
  • What additional work will you need to do to make these assessments work for your context?
  • What additional assessments will you need to create? Would there be value in sharing them?
