Transition to Asynchronous (0 minutes)

Facilitator Tip

During the midday asynchronous session, you will likely want to keep the web conference open so participants can work together and get help. You and your co-facilitator will work together to divide up the office hour time. While you are on, you should be supporting participants and creating breakout rooms as necessary.

Producer Tip

During the entire asynchronous break, make certain to assign host privileges to the facilitator or producer who will remain online. This is necessary to create breakout rooms for groups wishing to work together.

There is no need for a dedicated Transition to Asynchronous as that was handled in previous session.

Asynchronous (45 minutes)

(45 minutes) Begin Lesson Planning: Understand the Lesson Resources

Overview:

In this activity, you will become familiar with all of the materials in the lesson you will be teaching. In particular, you should explore the lesson and the resources available in the lesson, including:

  • Try activities and tools
  • Watch videos
  • Read lesson plan
  • Look through linked resources

Do This:

  • Read through the first page of the lesson plan
  • Read through the lesson planning guide
  • DO THE ACTIVITIES YOURSELF - Don't just read through the lesson plans. Make sure you work through the activities as a student
    • You shouldn't make assumptions about how activities will play out.
    • It's important that you test out the activities themselves.

Facilitator Tip

As they work facilitators should:

  • Circulate through the breakout rooms checking in with groups.
  • Allow groups to make their own choices about how to present the lesson but ask guiding questions where necessary to get them to consider how to best present the lesson.
  • Facilitators may clarify what comes in previous lessons or explain keep CS concepts if the group is very confused.
  • Both facilitators should be well versed in all lessons.

Teachers should be working on filling in Step 1 on page 11 of the Activity Packet.

NOTE: Groups will have 60 more minutes during the evening asynchronous for planning their lessons. The biggest goal right now should be to get through reading the lesson and doing activities. There is plenty of time later to figure out exactly how they will want to deliver the lesson.
