Introduction to the PLACE (15 minutes)

(5 minutes) PLACE Overview

Facilitator Tip

Be sure to re-share the PLACE URL where participants will find the asynchronous activities in multiple places and ways, so they do not have to spend time digging for it.

Facilitator Tip

This section should be conducted on the PLACE, not in the slides.

Use screen sharing to show participants the main Code.org CS Discoveries Virtual Local Summer Workshop page in the PLACE. Point out the following:

  • The page begins with the What’s Up with Computer Science Discoveries? video, followed by a high-level description of the local summer workshop and its goals.
  • Below that is information about how the full workshop is structured—as a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions.
  • If participants expand all the +/- bars, they can read to get a sense of the full workshop agenda. Synchronous activities found here are brief overviews of what facilitator(s) will do via video conferencing software. Asynchronous activities include an overview and an activity titled "Do This." Only asynchronous work is submitted in the PLACE.

Facilitator Tip

Be sure to emphasize the importance of “discussion.” Encourage participants to return to asynchronous discussions throughout the asynchronous session to respond and engage. Also, participants should reread discussions just prior to the start of the next synchronous session.

Facilitator Tip

As part of each Session 4 participants will need a way to submit Gots and Needs. A simple Google form should be sufficient. You will need to share a link to this survey in your slides and via a daily digest if you are using one.

(5 minutes) Asynchronous Activities

Navigate to the following asynchronous activities to show participants what types of activities to expect, not just in Module 1, Session 4, but throughout the modules:

  • Module 1 > Session 4 > Page 1 Lesson Planning: Prepare Your Lesson
  • Module 1 > Session 2 > Page 2 Unit 1 Wrap-up Point out the step-by-step instructions in "Do This," which include a video and discussion prompts. Demonstrate how to post in the discussion forum.
  • Clarify that they will occasionally be asked to "reflect" versus discuss, and that these prompts are intended for them to journal privately to themselves.
  • Module 1 > Session 4 > Page 3 Module 1 Wrap-Up At the end of each day/module, you'll be asked to submit "Gots & Needs" and to complete the daily survey.

(5 minutes) Questions

Ask for any questions they may have about how to use the platform.
