Content Overview (3 minutes)

Remarks

Chapter 1 is primarily focused on learning to program with hardware. We explored Chapter 1 with Module 7 and with the lesson investigations in the asynchronous work for Module 8. During this session we will dig into Chapter 2, which focuses on building physical prototypes.

(1 minute) Context setting

  • Display the unit calendar and point out the lessons explored throughout Module 7.

Facilitator Note: It might be helpful to have participants follow along in their curriculum guide, page 23, during this presentation.

(2 minutes) Chapter 2 Overview

Facilitator Instructions:

Facilitator Tip

This is a high level overview of Chapter 2, Unit 6. It is not expected that participants will walk away with a full understanding of Chapter 2 for Unit 6. The goal is for participants to know what they are working towards and feel comfortable with the overall Chapter 2 goals.

Display the “Chapter 2 Progression” slide from the slide deck

  • Provide a high level overview to show the overall chapter narrative. Participants should walk away with an understanding that each lesson builds towards the chapter project and that the main focus of the unit is programming with hardware.

Chapter 2 Project (22 minutes)

Producers: Prepare to send groups of 3-4 participants to breakout rooms for five minutes.

(2 minutes) Project Overview

  • Display the “Lesson 16: Project” slide
  • Briefly go over the project overview: Designing a computing device that combines hardware and software requires a good deal of preparation.
    • Starting with a clear plan can help students stay organized and identify issues ahead of time.
    • Keep track of what students need to do once they begin creating their device, both the physical and software components.
  • Help participants navigate to Unit 6, Lesson 16 (link is located in the slide deck) and show participants how to find the resources available for this project - peer review doc, rubric, CS practices reflection, project guide, sample marked rubrics, and sample peer review doc.

(10 minutes) Breakout Rooms: Explore Project Resources

Facilitator Tip

Participants will likely have questions related to the project. The facilitator should be familiar enough with the project to answer questions and offer support as needed. You might also encourage participants to think about the different types of materials they might have available for students to use for this project. Will students bring these materials to class? Will the school provide the materials?

Participants explore the project resources on Code Studio to know where to access resources and begin to think about how the resources will be used in the lesson and for assessment.

Transition:

  • (5 minutes) Participants explore Unit 6, Lesson 16 curriculum resources.
    • Suggest to groups they each may want to pick a resource to explore and share key takeaways to the rest of the group.
    • Encourage participants to add to the slide “Key Takeaways for Unit 6: Chapter 2 Project” slide for future reference.
  • (5 minutes)Participants discuss key takeaways, questions, or suggestions in breakout rooms.

Producers: Send groups of 3-4 participants to breakout rooms for ten minutes. Then, bring participants back to the main room.

Circulate:

  • Circulate the breakout rooms
  • Identify common or key ideas to share with the whole group

(5 minutes) Whole Group Share Out

Bring participants back to the main room after twelve minutes.

  • Participants share questions, suggestions, or key takeaways with the whole group.
    • Include any common or key ideas heard when circulating throughout the breakout rooms to the “Key Takeaways for Unit 6: Chapter 2 Project” slide.

(5 minutes) Share Example Projects

Share with participants either of the two sample projects included in the slide deck or include local examples.

  • Provide a couple of minutes for participants to ask clarifying questions about the examples.
