Day 1Day 2

CS Discoveries 2021 - 22 Virtual Workshop 4: Modules 7 & 8

Participants ARE NOT REQUIRED to use the Circuit Playground to complete the asynchronous work or to be able to engage in the synchronous workshops for Modules 7 and 8. The synchronous agenda contains opportunities for a facilitator to make choices based on their cohort’s access to Circuit Playgrounds.

Goals and Objectives

The content in virtual Modules 7 and 8 correspond to the content covered in the fourth in-person Academic Year Workshop. Throughout both modules participants will be exploring Unit 6 content and discussing equitable instructional practices as students "Learn Through Context". An outline of the goals and objectives for Modules 7 and 8 is below. For a full list of the high level objectives and CSTA Standards for CS Teacher alignment, click on the image below. This document can be used to help you understand how the workshop goals and objectives connect and build between sessions. This may also be a valuable resource to you as you consider any adjustments you decide![] to make to the agenda based on your local needs.

Connection Between Asynchronous Work and Synchronous Workshops

Module 7 Module 8
Participants will engage in a set of asynchronous work that includes:
  • Reviewing Unit 6, Chapter 1 content
  • Reflecting on the Problem Solving Process for programming
  • Investigating how the output device, Circuit Playground, interacts with App Lab in Code Studio
  • Brainstorming challenges, benefits, and implementation strategies for alternatives to teaching Unit 6
Participants will engage in a set of asynchronous work that includes:
  • Experimenting with taking input with getProperty()
  • Become familiar with taking input from Analog Sensors
  • Identify how students will engage in Code Studio using the Circuit Playground
  • Reflecting on where they are in supporting an equitable and inclusive CS Discoveries classroom
Facilitators should engage with the asynchronous work by:
  • Reading the participant reflections within Code Studio to identify misconceptions or key points that should be addressed in the synchronous workshop (Levels 12, 17, 18, 19, 20)
  • Reviewing the participant questions in the shared slide deck. Answer questions that have an easy answer directly in the table and identify questions that will be addressed in the synchronous workshop.
Facilitators should engage with the asynchronous work by:
  • Reading the participant reflections within Code Studio to identify misconceptions or key points that should be addressed in the synchronous workshop (Levels 9, 16, 19, 20)
  • Reviewing the participant questions in the shared slide deck. Answer questions that have an easy answer directly in the table and identify questions that will be addressed in the synchronous workshop.

Content and Equity

Over the course of Modules 7 and 8 you will be developing a narrative around both content and equity as participants reflect on the role they play as the teacher in both of these areas. The documents accessed by clicking on the images below are intended to help you understand and prepare for developing this narrative with your cohort. These resources can also be used to help you make informed decisions when modifying workshop activities to adjust to the needs of your cohort.
