Day 1Day 2

CS Discoveries 2021 - 22 Virtual Workshop 1: Modules 1 & 2

Goals and Objectives

The content in virtual Modules 1 and 2 correspond to the content covered in the first in-person Academic Year Workshop. Throughout both modules participants will be exploring Unit 3 content and discussing equitable instructional practices through the lens of the role of the teacher. An outline of the goals and objectives for Modules 1 and 2 is below. For a full list of the high level objectives and CSTA Standards for CS Teacher alignment, click on the image below. This document can be used to help you understand how the workshop goals and objectives connect and build between sessions. This may also be a valuable resource to you as you consider any adjustments you decide to make to the agenda based on your local needs.

Connection Between Asynchronous Work and Synchronous Workshops

Module 1 Module 2
Participants will engage in a set of asynchronous work that includes:
  • Reviewing Unit 3 content from the summer
  • Learning about variables and random numbers in Game Lab
  • Reviewing debugging resources and practicing debugging in Game Lab
  • Reflecting on their role as the teacher
Participants will engage in a set of asynchronous work that includes:
  • Using the draw loop to add movement to sprites in Game Lab
  • Using a counter pattern to animate sprites in Game Lab
  • Using conditionals to react to changes in variables and sprite properties
  • Reviewing a high level overview of the remaining content in Unit 3 including both end of chapter projects
  • Reflecting on the role of the teacher in supporting students during a programming lesson
Facilitators should engage with the asynchronous work by:
  • Reading the participant reflections within Code Studio to identify misconceptions or key points that should be addressed in the synchronous workshop (Levels 5, 11, 13, 15)
  • Reviewing the participant questions in the shared slide deck. Answer questions that have an easy answer directly in the table and identify questions that will be addressed in the synchronous workshop.
  • Reviewing the answers to the group reflection questions in the shared slide deck to identify misconceptions and key points to highlight in the synchronous workshop.

Content and Equity

Over the course of Modules 1 and 2 you will be developing a narrative around both content and equity as participants reflect on the role they play as the teacher in both of these areas. The documents accessed by clicking on the images below are intended to help you understand and prepare for developing this narrative with your cohort. These resources can also be used to help you make informed decisions when modifying workshop activities to adjust to the needs of your cohort.
