Purpose

Welcome participants as they join the workshop, share norms for the day, and provide an overview of the workshop. Participants ask questions and share about how implementing and teaching CS Fundamentals courses is going.

Welcome to the CS Fundamentals Deep Dive Workshop! Thank you for your continued work in support of equitable CS education.

The workshop goals of today are to:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of the curriculum and how it supports inclusive learning environments.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of CS teaching practices that support teaching CS Fundamentals equitably.

Remarks

We all are here for likely different reasons. Some of you have never taught CS before, and maybe others of you are looking to learn about more tools to bring to your classroom to teach CS. However, we are all here as a community of people who are looking to learn. To support that learning, we want to propose the following norms for our community.

  • Review the “Norms” slide with participants.
  • See the “Prior to the Workshop” section of the agenda for additional guidance.

Let’s begin by sharing questions you came to the workshop with about implementing and teaching CS Fundamentals.

Remarks

Throughout the workshop, I want to invite you to consider how your experience today might continue to shape how you see yourself as a CS teacher. Also, consider what that will mean for your students and how you approach implementing and teaching CS Fundamentals equitably.

(9 minutes) Breakout Rooms

(1 minute) As the facilitator, share your response to the following breakout room prompt before sending participants into breakout rooms. Use the “Discussion Goal” for the “Small Group Talk Share Out” to guide your response.

Facilitator Tip

As participants engage in sharing responses to the prompt with others in breakout rooms, identify trends in reactions on the following slides in addition to:

  • Question Parking Lot: identifying when to address questions.
  • Check-in: summarizing for participants how people are mostly feeling about implementing and teaching CS Fundamentals courses coming into the workshop.
    • Examples based on: most common shared images, words, or phrases; related images, words or phrases

(8 minutes) Then, participants discuss the following prompts and individually type responses on designated slides in breakout rooms with small groups of 3-4 people.

  • Prompts:
    • Do you see yourself as a CS teacher?
    • How has your experience with implementing and teaching CS Fundamentals shaped how you see yourself as a CS teacher?

Transition: Remind participants the designated slides include prompts for the breakout room discussion.

Producers: Send groups of 3-4 participants to breakout rooms for eight minutes. Then bring participants back to the main room.

Circulate: Circulate the breakout rooms and provide support as needed.

(5 minutes) Whole Group Share Out

Discussion Goal

Support participants in reflecting how their experiences with implementing and teaching CS Fundamentals may affect any of the following:

  • how often they teach CS and to which students
  • how much time they spend planning CS Fundamentals lessons
  • working towards equity in CS -
    • making CS accessible to all of their students
    • advocating for diversity (race, gender, ability) in CS
    • establishing inclusive CS Fundamentals lessons

Invite a few participants to share their responses to the prompts with the whole group.

  • Prompts:
    • Do you see yourself as a CS teacher?
    • How has your experience with implementing and teaching CS Fundamentals shaped how you see yourself as a CS teacher?

(5 minutes) Facilitator Share Out

  • (2 minutes) Share with participants the following about the “Check-in” slides:

    • Both unique feelings and overall sentiment about implementing and teaching CS Fundamentals courses.
  • (3 minutes) Share with participants the following about the Questions Parking Lot slides:

    • Immediate answers to questions.
    • Expected answers to questions addressed during the workshop.
      • Consider inviting other participants to share answers to some of the questions asked as appropriate.
