Day 1Day 2

CS Discoveries 2021 - 22 Virtual Workshop 2: Modules 3 & 4

Goals and Objectives

The content in virtual Modules 3 and 4 correspond to the content covered in the second in-person Academic Year Workshop. Throughout both modules participants will be exploring Unit 4 content and discussing equitable instructional practices for effective group dynamics and active student learning.

Click on the image below for an overview of the goals and outcomes for Modules 3 and 4, as well as a full list of the high level objectives and CSTA Standards for CS Teachers. This document can be used to help you understand how the workshop goals and objectives connect and build between sessions. This may also be a resource to use as you consider making any adjustments to the agenda based on your local needs.

Connection Between Asynchronous Work and Synchronous Workshops

Module 3 Module 4
Participants will engage in a set of asynchronous work that includes:
  • Previewing Unit 4 content and resources
  • Learning about the Problem Solving Process to solve complex problems and support students in developing empathy for users
  • Reflecting on the role of the student as an active learner and effective group member
  • Becoming familiar with a data inquiry cycle in support of equity in CS
Participants will engage in a set of asynchronous work that includes:
  • Identifying resources to reference throughout lessons
  • Becoming familiar with the Design Mode features within App Lab
  • Reflecting on supporting inclusion during group work
  • Becoming familiar with Unit 4, Chapter 1 and 2 projects and resources
Facilitators should engage with the asynchronous work by:
  • Reading the participant reflections within Code Studio to identify misconceptions or key points that should be addressed in the synchronous workshop (Levels 2, 3, 9, 10, 11)
  • Reviewing the participant questions in the shared slide deck. Answer questions that have an easy answer directly in the table and identify questions that will be addressed in the synchronous workshop.
  • Reviewing the answers to the group reflection questions in the shared slide deck to identify misconceptions and key points to highlight in the synchronous workshop.

Content and Equity

Over the course of Modules 3 and 4 you will be developing a narrative around both content and equity as participants reflect on the role of the student (and teacher) in both of these areas. The documents shown below are intended to help you understand and prepare this narrative with your cohort. Click on the images of the documents below to access them. These resources can also be used to help you make informed decisions when modifying workshop activities to adjust to the needs of your cohort.
