This session takes things from the “theoretical” to the “real-world” of assessment. Participants will decide what they will use for summative assessment with students in Units 1-3. Then, they will share their ideas with other participants and plan how they will us formative assessment and re-learning/redos/retakes during the year.

Creating your approach (50 minutes)
Producer Tip
Use the same groups as the last session
Facilitator Tip
It might be helpful to suggest planning by unit (answering the three questions for Unit 1, then for Unit 2, and so on), but other participants may want to focus on one question at a time and answer it for all three units first.
Facilitator Tip
Break into the same table groups of 3-4 as in previous Module 5 activities. Participants should complete the activity independently, but they should discuss with their groups to develop ideas.
(20 minutes) Identifying Your Summative Assessment Approach
Have participants turn to Part C in their Assessment Approach Organizer. Direct participants to work on Questions 1-3 for the next 20 minutes with the values they discussed earlier in mind as well as district/school requirements for assessment.
All teachers have different assessment requirements based on district and school, but we can still learn from one another. Make sure participants understand that they should complete the activity independently, but work with their groups to develop ideas.
Producer Tip
Randomize the participants into new groups. Try to put people with others that were not in their original group
(10 minutes) Re-group
Remarks
Now that you have started to take your values and organize your assessment approach around those values, share your plan with two other people not at your table. Look for commonalities between your approaches.
(10 minutes) Finish the Assessment Approach Organizer
Give participants time reminders as they go to keep participants on task. It is okay if participants do not finish the whole organizer, but encourage them to develop a clear plan for at least one unit so that they can go back on their own time and finish the other units.
(10 minutes) Share-out
Remarks
Now that you have had some time to discuss your approach with each other, let’s bring it to the whole room. It is okay if you did not finish the whole organizer. You will have time to further develop your plan later this afternoon during the Unconference or Open Lab.
Prompt: What is one new approach you are planning to take with formative or summative assessment this year in CSP?
1 minute: Think
8 minutes: Do a whip-around share-out to have one person per table share an answer
