2021 CS Principles Virtual Summer Workshop
This is the detailed facilitator agenda for Virtual Local Summer Workshops 2021. This agenda is intended for Local Summer Workshops which are 5-day blended, online trainings to prepare teachers to start teaching CS Principles. It focuses on the first three units of the course.
Special Notes for Virtual Workshops
As you prepare to deliver the Code.org Virtual Summer Workshop we wanted to cover a few high level tips in addition to the activity level tips that are provided in the Detailed Daily Agenda. While we have tried to provide as many resources as possible, some resources need to be “localized” so you will need to create them prior to the workshop. In addition, these resources are a guide. As with the in-person workshop guides, you should make the necessary adjustments to meet the needs of your participants, including modifying the types of asynchronous activities as you see fit.
- As you will likely make your own copies of these resources, we will maintain change logs for these documents and will alert facilitators of significant changes.
- Resources for the Place
- Sandbox User: vplpteacher Passcode: GetCoding#1 (Note: You will get a "Not Open" message until you login with these credentials)
- Facilitator Guide to the PLACE video
- The Code.org Facilitator Slack channel is the official support platform. If you need assistance, both Friday Institute and Code.org will be monitoring the channel to ensure the best help available.
Before the Workshop
- Register and enroll in your course at the PLACE. (You should receive this information from your Regional Partner. Here is a video describing the process)
- Once enrolled, you may want to watch the Facilitator Guide to The Place video. There is a similar video for participants.
- Create a some sort of daily digest or omnibus slide that contains the key information for your program and add it to each slide deck. Some of the key local bits are listed below but additional information to include might include:
- Zoom or other synchronous call information and links. Note: If you are using Zoom, you can use the same link for all 10 synchronous sessions.
- Off-hours contact information - Slack, text messaging, email, …
- Link to your instances of the PLACE (which you will get from your regional partner). You will likely want to make a vanity link for it.
- Create copies of all the slide decks for each course/cohort. For example if you have 3 CSP cohorts, you need three separate sets of decks because they serve as the notes and have share-out slides and other information unique to cohorts. It may be easiest to just create folders per course/cohort and link to the folder.
- At the end of each module, participants are still asked to provide Gots and Needs. These are currently scheduled at the end of the last asynchronous session of each module. So you will need a way for participants to submit them, likely anonymously. Here is an example of a Google Form which you might use to do this.
- In preparation for the last module, you may want to poll participants for how they will be implementing the course (AP or non-AP, Fall Block Schedule, Spring Block Schedule, or Full Year). There is an assignment in Module 4 Session 4 for them to complete the poll, but you will need to provide a method (again Google Form…)
Before Each Day
- As with face-to-face workshops, the slides are meant to be customized for your workshop. You will want to work through the slides for a given “day” or session, and make sure you have made the necessary customizations: Gots & Needs, Links, Breakout Room slides (based on the size of your cohort), etc.
- You will want to confirm with the “producer” the schedule and breakout rooms.
- Look at the agenda for polls and surveys for which you may need links or for which the producer will have to plan in your vc platform.
- Be sure to read the Transition to Asynchronous sessions so you are certain you have provided the necessary guidance for teachers.
