Session 29: Previously, On… Unit 2
10 minutes
lesson exploration
Purpose
This session gives participants a broad overview of Unit 2 and context for the first TLO of the day. We want participants to see the Internet Simulator in this session so they will be able to see how the “layers” build up in the next TLO that uses the Internet Simulator.
Objectives
- Participants use the internet simulator from U2L1 to connect to one another
- Participants can describe the connection between "representing information" in Unit 1 and “the internet” in Unit 2

(1 minute) Introduction to Unit 2
Remarks
Unit 2 is about The Internet. This unit transitions from talking about how information is represented on a computer to how we send digital information to each other through the internet. It is a 9 lesson unit where students build up the “layers of the internet” through activities that simulate the same issues the creators of the internet encountered. The end of the unit contains two lessons where students research a real-world dilemma related to the internet and create a “Policy One Pager” that takes an informed stance on that dilemma. Before we start our first TLO, we are going to look at the first lesson in the unit.
Facilitator Tip
If you are short on time, you can demo these features as well with your co-facilitator. The first time participants are in the internet simulator in TLO is with a “network figuration” (where they are all on a router) so the 1-to-1 communication is less important than being familiar with the general interface of the internet simulator.
(8 minutes) Looking at Unit 2, Lesson 1 - Welcome to the Internet
Use the slides to cover the following:
-
(1 minute) Lesson Description: This lesson sets students up to learn about the internet for the remaining lessons in the unit. Students are able to share what they already know and also start to use a ro-occuring tool in this unit - The Internet Simulator
-
(1 minute) Learning Objectives:
- Students will be able to Identify questions they have about how the Internet works.
- Students will be able to use the Internet Simulator to communicate information with a partner.
-
(1 minute) Key beats of the lesson
- Warm-up: Student discussion about how individuals share digital data in the real world.
- Activity:
- Students brainstorm answers to the question “What is the Internet?” and develop questions they have about the internet.
- Students get on the Internet Simulator and find key features of the simulator.
- Wrap-up: The lesson ends with a short video about the internet and a synthesizing discussion.
-
(5 minutes) Get on the internet simulator in level 2 in the lesson with participants.
- Have elbow buddies partner up and communicate on the internet simulator.
- As you wait for everyone to get on, encourage partners to explore what they see.
- Once everyone is on, walk through the key features of the internet simulator
- Different sections of the widget: Received message log, sent message log, send a message.
- Show students the "My Device" tab and demonstrate how you can turn on or off the layers of abstraction (binary, decimal, ASCII).
- Talk about what the graphic represents - a direct line between you and your partner.
-
End: The internet simulator will change over time, but this lesson shows the key features of the internet simulator.
(1 minute) Reminder of roles
Remarks
With that we are going to do our next TLO Unit 2, Lesson 2 which follows this lesson. As a reminder, the teaching group will be wearing the “teacher hat” and you will be wearing your “learner hat.”
