Remarks
In the morning we talked about formative assessment and how important it is in both plugged and unplugged lessons. Now we are going to talk about summative assessment.
Before we get started, we know that each teacher’s individual, school, and district philosophies and requirements around summative assessment are different. In this session we are going to look at two potential summative assessments that are included in Unit 1. You may decide to use these tools as formative assessments. You may decide to modify them for your classroom - these are all choices you as the teacher can make - we just want you to know what is in the Unit.

Remarks
As we mentioned earlier there is a 2-day project and a multiple choice assessment. When developing the curriculum, Code.org planned for the project to be used in tandem with a multiple choice assessment. As you will see, the project assesses students' abilities to use what they just learned about Digital Information to read and understand a news article about digital information - this means not all the skills or content students learned from the unit is present in the project. The Multiple Choice assessment is designed to cover all of the learning objectives of the unit.
Let’s look at these assessments together.
Exploring Assessments in Unit 1 (32 minutes)
(13 minutes) Looking at the Project Assessment
Have participants navigate to the lesson plan for Unit 1 Lesson 12 - Digital Information Dilemmas. They should use this time to look at the following:
- Skim the U1L12 and U1L13 lesson plans
- Skim 1-2 of the articles listed
- Look at the slides for lessons 12 - 13
- Review the rubric provided in lesson 13
- Review the exemplar in Code Studio Lesson 13
(5 minutes) Looking at the Multiple Choice Assessment
Have participants navigate to Unit 1 Lesson 14 - Assessment in Code Studio and review the assessment. Since we did not do all of the lessons, participants may not know all of the answers. The goal is to see what is in the assessment at a high level.
(14 minutes) Making sense of the assessments
(8 minutes) Prompt: Comparing the project to the multiple-choice test:
- What skills do you see assessed in the project?
- What content do you see assessed in the project?
- What skills do you see assessed in the multiple choice test?
- What content do you see assessed in the multiple choice test?

(6 minutes) Prompt: How might you use these assessments in your classroom?

Remarks
You know your students and context best. Every teacher will use these assessments differently, and that is okay. On Friday we will dig into assessment a bit deeper, but for right now, we want you to know what is available to you.
