Session 19: Previously on… Unit 1 Lesson 8

15 minutes

lesson exploration | role play

Purpose

Since this lesson uses the Pixelation Widget differently, we want to provide participants a space to see how the tool works and connects to the learning objectives.

Objectives

  • Participants can explain how RGB color works
  • Participants have experience with the Pixelation Widget in a different form than originally introduced
  • Participants can see the storyline develop from Lesson 7 to Lesson 9 in TLOs

Lesson 8 Overview (5 minutes)

Let’s look at the lesson that comes after the lesson we just saw on Black and White Images.

Lesson 8 is about Color Images.

  • Description: This is a second opportunity for students to interact with the Pixelation Widget, but this time they will work with color pixels. Students start the lesson learning that each pixel uses red, green, and blue lights that can be turned on or off using bits.

  • Learning Goals:

    • Students will be able to explain how bits can be used to represent the individual pixels of a color image
    • Students will be able to explain how digital data is used to approximate real-world analog data

  • Key beats of the lesson:

    • Warm-up: Students (attempt to) name all of the possible shades of “blue”
    • Activity:
      • Students work in CodeStudio with the Pixelation Widget, except this time they will be able to make colors.
      • They check with a partner before moving on to challenges.
      • Students use a Sampling Frequency Widget to recreate colored images
    • Wrap-up:
      • The teacher leads the group to summarize what they have learned about representing images digitally.

Facilitator Tip

If there is time, you may want to show this video to the group. The priority should be on exploring the widget, but some groups of participants like the closure that comes with seeing the “real thing” through videos.

The class ends with a video about representing data with bits on a computer

Explore the Widget (10 minutes)

Remarks

(1 minute) Let’s dive in deeper to this lesson. We are not doing a TLO on this lesson, but we do want you to see how the widget works with colors.

Facilitator Tip

In Levels 2, 4, and 5, the directions are written so that students who are color-blind do not need to be able to distinguish between colors to be able to complete the task. That being said, students who are color-blind may not be able to visually check their work in the same way as other students. You can suggest that students who are color-blind ask a partner to check their work at the end of each of these levels.

Level 7: It is recommended that students who are color-blind do the black and white gradient image which is the option in the lower right hand corner of the pop-up in Level 7.

(8 minutes) Navigate to U1L8 - Level 1 and try doing the challenges in Code Studio for the next 8 minutes.

Remarks

(1 minute) Where is this going? As we use more bits to represent more information, it becomes unmanageable - there are too many bits to store! We want to reduce the number of bits we use which is what we will see in our next lesson. We will do this next lesson in a TLO after lunch.
