Session 12: Lesson Planning: Understanding the Lesson

60 minutes

lesson planning

Purpose

The purpose of this session is for participants to understand the lesson they have been assigned and the resources available in the lesson:

  • Try activities and tools
  • Watch videos
  • Read lesson plan
  • Review and coordinate the slides with the lesson plan
  • Look through linked resources

Participants get to know what is actually in their lesson and the resources available to them (lesson plans, Code Studio and slides).

Objectives

  • Participants understand how to use curriculum resources to prepare for lessons, including how to read a lesson plan, the importance of doing the activities in the lesson plan, and reviewing the slides.
  • Participants understand how to navigate the Code.org website to access lesson plans and activities.

Supplies & Prep

Room Setup:

  • Normal Breakout Room Set Up

Facilitator Supplies:

Before the workshop:

  • Both facilitators should be well-versed in all lessons. This includes:
    • Key things (either in terms of content or delivery) about each lesson that you think a teacher should pay attention to when planning.
    • Planning guiding questions to help participants think about those key things.
    • Understanding what should be modeled in the lesson based on the guidelines in the Activity Packet.
  • Build a check-in schedule that makes each facilitator responsible for checking in with the same 4 groups. It’s good to see the same people multiple times, which is easier if you’re splitting the room.
  • CSP Summer Workshop 2021 - Monday - Slides

Facilitator Tip

You and your co-faciltiator should be both very active during this entire session. Successful lesson planning sessions will make smoother sailing for the 8 hours spent in TLO. Things you both should do during these sessions:

  • Make sure everyone can find the resources
  • Watchout for conflicts between participants in a teaching group
  • Ensure that participants are DOING the activity, not just reading about it.
  • Help enforce the “this is time to get to know what is in your lesson” goal here. If a participant tries to break up the lesson to different people, remind them that there is time to do that tomorrow.
  • Watch for groups who want to “go rogue” and do their own lesson instead of what is in the lesson plan. To intervene, it can be helpful to remind them
    • A) They should look at what is in this lesson first
    • B) It is their responsibility to show participants what is in the lesson
    • C) They will be able to share their choices, advice, and takeaways at the end of the lesson. They can also share additional resources in the group notes for people to access later
  • For participants who are “done” ask them what the first thing is in the lesson. Have them walk through the lesson out loud. Ask them what portions they think might go shorter or longer with the group or how they will know to “move on” from a portion of the lesson plan - how will they know if students have learned the content?

(2 minutes) Get into teaching groups

Have teaching groups sit together. You can randomly form teaching groups by counting off by eights or you can put a slide up on the board with the teaching groups more intentionally chosen. Some facilitators like to balance teaching groups so that no two participants from the same district are together or to place new-to-CS participants with other new-to-CS participants so that they get a chance to plan themselves (vs having an experienced computer science teacher take the lead).

(8 minutes) Overview of the Lesson Planning Process & Resources

Start by having participants review the TLO overview in their Activity Packet (page 13).

Using slides, remind them:

  • They have an hour today and 50 minutes tomorrow to plan for teaching their lesson
  • Today they will be working on Step 1: Get Familiar with the Lesson
    • Spend today mostly focused on understanding the flow and contents of the lesson and all its resources - tomorrow they will focus on breaking down how to teach it with their group.
  • Review resources they can use in this process:
    • How to access the lesson plans, slides, and Code Studio materials online.
    • Point out the pages in the Curriculum Guide they can use to learn about the context of the unit (pages 13-22)
    • Remind participants of the Curriculum Guide resources that describe strategies for a successful plugged or unplugged lesson (in page 12)
    • Physical printed materials
      • Lesson Plans are printed separately - 2 copies per group
      • Remind participants that any activity guides participants will need during the lesson will be in their Activity Packets
    • Point out the Lesson Tips for each lesson in the Activity Packet (pages 15 - 19), which include:
      • What happens prior to their lesson for context of their lesson
      • Why we chose this lesson for TLO
      • Key features of the lesson
      • Tips for their specific lesson

Before letting everyone dig in, check that participants have the following 3 things open in separate tabs for their lesson:

  • The lesson plan online (so that they can click on the resources)
  • The slides
  • Their lesson on Code Studio

Pause and re-group: Again, the goal here is to understand what is in your lesson. Before we let you all dig in, does anyone have any questions?

Facilitator Tip

Navigating the website and resources can be tricky for some participants. Add in extra checks to ensure everyone is in the right spot. Having them check with their neighbor is helpful way to hold people accountable to getting to the right tabs and building in support for navigation that can come in the form of partner-support (rather than facilitator support)

Provide substantial wait time, clear up any questions.

Participant Work Time (40 minutes)

Goal: Participants get familiar with all the materials in the lesson.

Prompt: Read through the lesson and DO THE ACTIVITIES with your team.

  • Biggest point to make to participants is that they shouldn’t make assumptions about how activities will play out.
  • It’s important that they test out the activities themselves.

Participants should be working on filling in Step 1 on page 20 of their Activity Packet.

NOTE: Groups will have 50 more minutes tomorrow to finish planning their lessons. The biggest goal right now should be to get through reading the lesson and doing activities, there is plenty of time tomorrow to figure out exactly how you want to deliver the lesson.
